The Cost of Untreated Hearing Loss

A November 28, 2018 Reuter’s article emphasized that older adults with untreated hearing loss can develop additional health problems leading to more frequent hospitalizations and health costs. The article, entitled “Untreated hearing loss linked to higher health costs, more hospitalizations,” looked at two U.S. studies, one from Johns Hopkins and the other from the University of Michigan Medical School.

“Hearing loss has been linked to a range of health problems including cognitive decline, falls, depression, reduce quality of life in an increased number of hospitalization and emergency room visits,” the article states.

At CNC Hearing & Balance Center, we are not surprised. Our medical staff, including Neurotologist Moises Arriaga, MD and our professional audiologists repeatedly emphasize that untreated hearing loss presents a greater risk of depression, fall risk, dementia and other medical conditions. A November, 2018 study in  JAMA otolaryngology-head and neck surgery concluded that older adults with untreated hearing loss experience higher healthcare costs and utilization patterns compared with adults without hearing loss.

The chances of declining hearing loss increase for people over the age of 65 and grows even higher for men and women 75 years of age and older. Also, people exposed to prolonged loud noises in the workplace are at greater risk of hearing loss.

But sometimes, hearing loss is due to a medical issue. It is important to rule out another cause for your hearing loss.

In the long run, improving your hearing with a hearing device is a lot less expensive than putting yourself at risk for some of the serious medical conditions that can result from ignoring your hearing loss.
